Today it was announced that starting in 2014, Conde Nast's Intern Program will be discontinued. For someone who has dreamed of landing an internship with one of my favorite magazines, this is really disappointing.
There are speculations that the reason behind this decision are the two lawsuits that were filed against Conde Nast by two former interns claiming that they were paid below minimum wage.
I love most of the magazines published by Conde Nast and had plans on applying for internships with them for Summer 2014. I went to Teen Vogue's Fashion U expecting to get advice on how to land an internship and I did. However, now it seems that I won't get the chance to intern with them. I'm disappointed but there are always other internships out there. And who knows? They may create a new program where young aspiring editors, like myself, may be able to gain some experience.
It may become much more challenging to break into the fashion media industry. It's time to get a lot more creative!
